Lorne Hanson, Age 89
Lorne Hanson was born and raised in the Town of Gilman in Pierce County to Harvey and Lulu (Komisrud) Hanson on January 20, 1927. He attended Locust Grove School through 8th grade, then on to Spring Valley High School graduating in 1945. Lorne listed Don't Fence Me In as his favorite song in Spring Valley High School's 1945 Yearbook. Following high school he briefly worked in a factory in Hudson until realizing his life's passion lay in farming beneath God's blue sky cathedral. Lorne and his two brothers, Harland and Ivan, helped their parents run the family farm.
On May 22, 1948 Lorne married lifelong neighbor and school classmate Mary LaMoine Carr although they did not date until the night of their Senior Banquet. Lorne and LaMoine were married at St. Joseph Catholic Church in El Paso. Lorne enjoyed telling the story of his and LaMoine's early school days when they were instructed to write their names on the blackboard. LaMoine wrote Mary LaMoine Carr so Lorne said he did marry LaMoine Carr. The newlyweds shared a home with LaMoine's parents, and became partners with them running the Carr Family farm. Lorne and LaMoine purchased the farm from Frank and Nellie Carr in 1955, renaming it Carrson Farm. They were still actively involved with farming the land purchased by LaMoine's grandfather, James Carr, in 1867. Lorne cooperatively farmed with his father Harvey and his brother Ivan for many years.
An advocate of volunteerism and public service Lorne participated in local government with positions on the Spring Valley School Board, Spring Valley Area Ambulance Board, Pierce County Planning Commission, Pierce County Board of Adjustment, Town of Gilman Planning Commission, and as Chairman of the Town of Gilman. Lorne was first elected Chairman of the Town of Gilman in 1969, and served in that position for 44 years. Lorne volunteered his time as a Project Leader with the Martell Rushers 4-H Club, and as an usher and member of the Holy Name Society at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spring Valley.
Lorne was well read and a willing participant in any discussion about politics and current events. Any aspirations of persuading Lorne to support an idea that couldn't be morally defended were in vain. Lorne enjoyed cheering for the Green Bay Packers, and was entertained by the tears pouring out of the television whenever the Vikings lost!
Lorne was preceded in death by his parents Harvey and Lulu, mother-in-law and father-in-law Nellie and Frank Carr, brothers Harland and Ivan, sisters and brothers in law Glenn Hovde, Sister Muriel Carr, Frances (Carr) and Frank Merth, and Delores Hanson. Lorne and LaMoineÕs marriage of nearly 68 years has been blessed with 8 children, 19 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be given in Lorne's name to Spring Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center or Sacred Heart Catholic Church Spring Valley.
The family wants to extend our deepest gratitude to the staff and volunteers at the Spring Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center and Valley Villas for the thoughtful caregiving and kindness extended to Lorne, LaMoine, and their family. |
